ELECTION IN CANADA

IMPORTANCE EMPHASISED BY PREMIER ALLEGATION OF SLANDEROUS ATTACKS. SOME CONSERVATIVE GAINS LIKELY. By Telegranh—Press Association— Copyright. OTTAWA, March 22. Mr Mackenzie King, in a final election broadcast, emphasised the election’s importance as the first vote in a free democracy in war time. He charged Dr Manion, loader of the Conservative Party, with slanderous personal attacks. There is some anxiety in Ministerial circles, where it is admitted that the Conservatives are certain to gain. Dr Manion’s ability to speak French is an asset. Moreover, he has contrived to focus attention on domestic issues, in which there are grievances against the Government. In addition, many voters believe that as an imperfect Mackenzie King Ministry is likely to be returned it would be best in the national interest to have a strong Opposition calling it to account.
