PUBLICLY REBUKED
THE AMERICAN MINISTER TO CANADA
SEQUEL TO CRITICISM OF ISOLATIONISTS.
MR CORDELL HULL'S TELEGRAM
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WASHINGTON, March 22.
The Secretary of Slate (Mr Cordell ‘Hull) telegraphed Mr James Cromwell, United States Minister in Canada, that his speech of last week, in which he criticised American, isolationists, was likely to disturb relations between the United States and other Governments. Mr Hull added that il contravened the standing instructions to diplomats and asked him to observe them in future. This is the first time in memory that the State Department has publicly rebuked an envoy.
Mr Cromwell, addressing the Canadian Empire Club, criticised American isolationists, and gave a warning that Germany “frankly and openly seeks to destroy the institutions and social and economic order on which the United States Government is founded. It is only too apparent that lhe life, liberty, livelihoood and very safety of the citizens of all neutral democracies may be dependent on the outcome of the present war."
