THIRD ECHELON

HUNDRED MEN WANTED

AREA QUOTA NOT YET FILLED

STATEMENT BY MAJOR WILLIAMS

In an interview today Major C. J. Williams, Area Staff Officer for Area 7 (Hawke’s Bay-East Coast-Wairarapa), made an appeal for more recruits to fill the area quota for the 3rd Echelon of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. The area quota, including additional men for the Maori battalion, is 814 men, while the number at present available is just over 700. One hundred additional recruits, fit for active service, are required within the next week or so. Tins area held the proud record of being the first in New Zealand to fill its quota for the 2nd Echelon. The Gisborne sub-area had done particularly well, and at present was leading in its registrations for both pakeha and Maori units, followed closely by Napier and Hastings centres. The response from Southern Hawke’s Bay and the Wairarapa had been very good, but lately had fallen off considerably. Major Williams expressed his confidence that once the position was made known, the response would be a ready one. He appealed especially to the younger men between the ages of 21 and 30. Others up to 35, and in special cases 40 years of age, would be accepted, but there, was a special call to the younger men who had no family responsibilities, to join up and do their part. It is not sufficient to fill the quotas for the first, second and third echelons which comprise the full division that New Zealand had promised. The division has to. be maintained in the field, and for this purpose a steady and adequate supply of reinforcements was necessary. "The cause for which we are fighting is a worth-while one," he said. “If the heritage of freedom which is ours is to be preserved, and if world security is to be a reality instead of a dream, some sacrifice is demanded of all. The part that falls to the young men of New Zealand, and one which they should feel ready and proud to assume, is one that will place them in the front of the line. The Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay have recently done honour to their members of the Second Echelon. This in itself is a challenge to other young men to enlist, to support their comrades and friends who have already joined up. Men are wanted now. One hundred more men are required from Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa within the next week, so that our own units of the Third Echelon will enter camps complete. Eligible men are asked to enlist without delay.” WAIRARAPA QUOTA MEN POSTED TO UNITS.
