S.M. COURT MONTHLY SITTING. ("Times-Age" Special.) The monthly sitting of the Carterton S.M. Court was held yesterday afternoon, Mr H. P. Lawry. S.M.. presiding. The following cases were dealt with: — Judgment was given for plaintiff in me following cases: —Carterton Furnishing Co. v. V. B. Boyle, claim £lO 10s. judgment by default with court costs £1 4s, solicitor’s fee £1 Ils; A. H. Krahagen v. Joyce Hail, claim 15s, costs 13s; Wairarapa Electric Power Board v. J. E. Loader, claim 8s lOd, costs 10s; R. Allen v. W. Abbott, claim £l3 16s. This case was defended, Mr D. L. Taverner appearing for plaintiff and Mr McKenzie for defendant. A counter claim for £ll was withdrawn. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £8 12s with court costs £1 4s, and solicitor’s fee £1 6s.
Judgment summonses: W. Vaughan proceeded against J. G. Murray for the recovery of £2 Ils for meat supplied. Defendant was ordered to pay forthwith, in default 3 days in the Wellington gaol; D. Gillespie and P. L. Darke sued P. L. James for £3 9s 6d. Defendant was ordered to pay forthwith in default 3 days in the Wellington gaol; G. A. Vincent proceeded against Roy S. Johnstone for the recovery of £l3 Ss 3d, the judgment was varied to £12.4s 9d. payable at the late of 12s 6.1 per month, the first payment to be made forthwith, and thereafter, on the 20th of each month; Watson and Co. proceeded against Puke Puke Namana for the recovery of £l3 2s lid. The Magistrate ordered the amount to be paid forthwith in default 12 days in the Wellington gaol, the warrant to be suspended so long as defendant naid £1 a week. Inspector Nicolson, of the Transport Department, brought a charge against C. A. Lethaby of having operated a motor vehicle carrying a load in excess of the maximum for which it was licensed. Mr Lethaby conducted his own case. Defendant was fined 10s and 10s costs. Boy Scouts. Nine members of the Carterton troop of the Boy Scouts left today for Seatoun, under the charge of Scoutmaster H. T. Ray. While there they will attend the Exhibition. £ BOWLING PRAGNELL CUP. A very keen and interesting game was played on the Carterton green for the Pragnell Cup. The challenger] was Mr J. Connolley, of the Greytown Club, and the holder of the trophy is Mr Sorensen. On the 20th end the score was 20 points each. Sorensen managed to get one on the last head and retained the trophy. Messrs Harrington, A. Thompson. R. Thompson and Riggs is) left Carterton this morning by car and reached Wellington in time to board the s.s. Matangi at 8.15 a.m. en route to Nelson where they will take part in the Nelson Easter tournament. Messrs Smith, Underhill, G. Hart and Barber (s) left today for Palmerston North to take part in the Easter tournament. A progressive pairs tournament will he held on the Carterton green tomorrow. A large number of entries have been received but there is still tune for further entries to be made. ENTERTAINMENT FOR SOLDIERS DALEFIELD HALL MONDAY EVENING. Residents of Dalefield on Monday evening next will entertain seven soldiers from the district in the Dalefield Town Hall. Dancing will commence at 8 o’clock and the music will .be supplied by Tom Udy’s Dance Band. The admission has been fixed at Is 6d both for ladies and men. Supper is to be provided and the function should be a very enjoyable one. Mr Arch. Knowles is the hon. secretary. FIRE BRIGADE MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Fire Brigade, held in the Fire Station last evening, members entertained ex-Fireman A. R. Steffert. Superintendent R. P. Wakelin presided. The toast list included. “The King,” "Soldiers of New Zealand,” and The Guest of the Evening.” The superintendent said it was a pleasure to the Carterton Fire Brigade to welcome and honour a brother fireman. Mr. A. R Steffert, who was at one time a valued member of the Carterton Fire Brigade but latterly had been associated with the Whakatane Fire Brigade. On behalf of the Carterton members he wished the guest of the evening the best of good luck and a safe return to New Zealand. There was an unique occurrence at the meeting when Master Warren Catt was elected a member of the brigade. Thus a father and his three sons are members of the brigade. Service honours were presented to Foreman A. R. Clarke, 5 years’ medal; Fireman B. Catt, 5 years’ medal; Firemaw L. M. Clarke, 2 years’ bar, 11 years’ service; Secretary J. Finn, 2 years’ bar, 17 years’ service. Dance at Parkvale. There was a very large attendance at the Parkvale Hall last evening when a dance was held fo aid of the hall funds, the result being that the committee will be able to replace the crockery at the hall. The music for the dance was played by Tom Udy’s Dance Band, and Mr. C. Jensen, jun.. was M.C. Supper was provided by the ladies committee headed by Mrs. B. Renall. A dinner was won 'by Mr. B. Roberts, jun. Two
Monte Carlo dances were held, the winners being Miss M. Adlam and Mr. C. Bliss and Miss B. Mark and Mr T. Rose. A spot waltz was won by Mrs C. Jensen and Mr B. Renall. Entertainment of Soldiers. A large attendance of Carterton residents was present at a meeting held last night. Mr. D. L. Taverner presided. It was decided to entertain soldiers on Tuesday. March 26. There are to be speeches in the Memorial Square, followed by a procession headed by members of the R.S.A., to the Band Room, where the soldiers will be the guests of the R.S.A. The Carterton Band and the Wairarapa Pipe Band will be present. The Mayor of Carterton, the chairman of the South Wairarapa County Council and the president of the R.S.A. will be speakers at the function.
It was decided to present a propelling pencil to each Carterton and district soldier. A committee consisting of Mesdames Gayfer, L. Fairbrother and Mr. D. Irwin was appointed to purchase the gifts. Church Services. Services will be held in St. Mark's Church, Carterton, tomorrow (Good Friday), and on Easter Day (Sunday) lhe usual services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. will be held. On this occasion ’he offertories will be handed to the Vicar. A service will also be held at Waihakeke on Sunday at 2 p.m, 'l’ne services will be taken by the Rev. W. F. Stent.
