PLANTING OF BULBS
FOR EARLY SPRING DISPLAY. There are plenty of bulbs that can be put in now to make the garden gay in the early spring months, such as narcissi of all sorts, anemones, ranunculus. ixias, freesias. montbrelia, snowflakes. and Watsonias. All these things are worth a place, and most ,of them arc excellent for cutting when flowers are scarce. The single anemones do well, and also'those of the St Brigid strain. These latter are semi-double, and are also good flowers for cutting. The common variety of montbretia is rather a weed, but some of the newer named sorts should find a place in every garden. The flowers are much larger than the older sorts/and are valuable for cutting in the autumn. The Watsonias. especially the new coloured varieties, are splendid to have one or two clumps in a border. They come into bloom just before Christmas, and will, if cut when young.' go on unfolding their flowers in water. All these plants like good soil and plenty of cultivation after they have come up. Ranunculus do best in a ligh sandy loam, and should not be planted too close together.
