YOUTH CONVICTED AND FINED £3. ' . OFFENCE ON SATURDAY NIGHT. “It is a very serious offence. There seems to be a general slackness in this sort of thing. There is far too much of it going on." stated Mr A. D. Low. J.P., in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning when severely admonishing a young man. Ross Fergus, of Masterton. and formerly of Dannevirke. for using obscene language in the Municipal Hall on Saturday night. Mr W. G. Lamb. J.P.. was associated with Mr Low on the Bench. Fergus was Convicted and lined £3. His application for the suppression of his name was refused. Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett stated that the charge arose out of Fergus using foul language in the entrance of the Town Hall as people were coming cut of the Interhouse Association’s dance at midnight on Saturday. Fergus was arrested by Constable R. Hill who was nearby. In a statement Fergus admitted forcing his way through the crowd leaving the dance hall to look for a man with whom he had been involved in a fracas, and using the language mentioned in the charge, to Constable Hill. :

Fergus pleaded intoxication and was dealt with as stated. It was pointed cut by Mr Low that Fergus was liable to a £2O fine or twelve months’ imprisonment
