PATRIOTIC FUND

FIGHTING SERVICES WELFARE APPEAL. The committee controlling the Fighting Service Welfare Fund appeal regrets that it must once more postpone the auction uf the ■ picture of 11.M.5. Achilles and Wairarapa members of the ship’s company. Friday evening was considered by the committee to be inopportune and unsuitable. The proposal to auction the picture at this evening’s display of period costumes in the Opera House was not acceptable to the committee controlling the display so the campaign committee has had to change its plans again. It is hoped, subject, to the approval of the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, to hold the auction on Wednesday evening at the function at which men of the Army, Navy and Air Force now on leave are to be entertained. It is to be hoped that the public will attend in large numbers for the dual purpose of entertaining these men and taking part in the bidding for the picture. The donation of a guinea to the fund acknowledged as from the children of Whatman Home should have been from the children of Whatman School. TOTAL NOW £2622. DISTRICT’S CONTRIBUTION. At 11 a.m. today district contributions to the Fighting Services Welfare Fund totalled £2622 13s Bd. Although the campaign finished on Saturday, several returns have yet to come to hand.
