EKETAHUNA

A RIVER TRIP ADVENTURE ON WANGANUI. (“Times-Age" Special.) Messrs Malcolm Robbie, Haunui. and Athol Kilgour. Tiraumea. in company with Mr Frank Grashinski, Ratana. have just completed a trip down the Wanganui River by canoe. Starting from Taumarunui the party covered the distance of 140 miles to Wanganui in ten days of leisurely travel. One member of the party stated that he could not find words with which to describe the magnificent scenery of the upper reaches of the Wanganui and remarked on the wonderful orchards which lined the river banks.. The party enjoyed good and successful pig hunting and deer stalking during the journey. PLUNKET SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Plunket Society was held in the Fire Brigade Room yesterday. Mrs C. Albrechtsen, president, presided ovei the following members, Mesdames J. McAnulty, W. N. Richardson and L. Ives (acting-secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mrs S. M. George. Accounts amounting to £25 4s 6d wpre passed. As a result of the recent function arranged by Mrs McAnulty. Senr, at Kaiparoro, the society’s share of the proceeds amounted to £4 Ils Old. The president stated that the result, was very pleasing and thanked the Kaiparoro ladies for their continued support.

The nurse's report stated that 60 adults. 57 babies and 4 children visited the rooms during the month. Arrangements were completed for the conducting of a hoop-la at the Eketahuna Sports on Easter Monday. CRICKET DRAW FOR TOMORROW. Following is the draw for tomorrow's matches in the Bush Cricket Association's competition: Pahiatua v High School, at Pahiatua; Fire Brigade v Eketahuna, at Eketahuna: Mangamaire a bye. S.M. COURT QUARTERLY SITTING. The quarterly sitting of the S.M. Court was held yesterday. Mr H. P. Lawry presiding. The Traffic Inspector (Mr W. G. Milne) proceeded against David Bourke, Hamua, for operating a lorry without a warrant of fitness. There was no appearance of defendant who was convicted and fined 10s with costs 12s. Failing to renew his radio licence cost Ray Trenton Giles £1 and costs 12s. Ivan Bruce Tomlinson was'charged, on the information of the police, with working at his trade or calling in a public place on a Sunday. The offence occurred at Pleckville. A penalty of £1 and 12s costs was inflicted. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil cases: W.F.C.A. v L. G. Young, £8 8s 7d. costs £2 6s 6d; W.F.C.A. v J. O. Cooper, £1 5s sd. costs £1 18s; Nireaha and Sterling Co-op Stores, Ltd v Albert Goss, £26 16s sd, costs £4 8s 6d; Mary Bilby v Charles William McLaughlin, £4 10s. costs £1 4s 6d: Tararua Power Board v B. Harrod, £1 16s sd, costs 14s. Roy Giles, on a judgment summons was ordered to pay D. P. Ryan and Sons, Ltd. the sum of £24 16s 6d forthwith. in default three weeks’ imprisonment. A FAREWELL GATHERING ON WEDNESDAY. On Wednesday afternoon at the residence of Mrs W. Jones, Alfredton Road, members of the Ladies’ Guild and adherents of the local Methodist Church met to farewell Mrs Keall, who will be departing from the town in the near future.

The time passed quite pleasantly in social chat and games. The winner of a competition was the Rev Mr Keall. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Jones and Boustcad and this was enjoyed to the full. The president of the guild. Mrs R. Gallagher presented Mrs Keall with a posy.

Mrs Gallagher, in asking the guest to accept an electric toaster from the guild members said that they all regretted her going, for during the time Mrs Keall had been associated with the guild she had been a great source of help and inspiration to the members. They wished her God-speed and a happy future. Mrs Keall thanked her well-wishers for the nice gift and the kind sentiments that accompanied it.

Musical honours were heartily. ac corded the recipient.

CAR WRECKED A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. A sedan car. driven by Mr W. Taylor and containing Mrs J. Williams. High. Street, and Mr A. Ramsay. Stanley Street, as passengers, capsized opposite the residence of Mr K. Marenzi a' about 6.30 o'clock last evening. Proceeding down Stanley Street and nearing the corner the car went into a skid which carried it a considerable distance and it finally somersaulted twice. The driver was rendered unconscioir and the other two occupants received a severe shaking. Mi- Taylor was taken into Mr Marenzi’s residence where he was attended to by Dr Simmers. Hr later recovered consciousness and i: progressing favourably. The ear was badly damaged. OBITUARY MRS M. A. ELSMORE. The late Mrs M. A. Elsmore, whose death occurred at the Pahiatua Hospital on Friday last, was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs G. Hardy, pf Blenheim and was born at Newcastle England. 69 years ago. The late Mr. Elsmore arrived in New Zealand with her parents and six sisters 54 year.'-' ago by the Ruapehu and landed al Port. Chalmers. The voyage out was very rough and a fever epidemic broke out on board. On reaching Port Chalmers the entire ship's company wa« quarantined for tt fortnight. The familynext came up to Wellington and then finally settled at Blenheim, at which place Mrs Elsmore married. Some 36

years ago Mr and Mrs Elsmore and family took over a farm at Newman where Mrs Elsmore has lived until hetdeath. Mrs Elsmore was predeceased by her husband six years ago. A family of nine daughter, Mrs Hill (Napier), Mrs Pearce (Manga tainoka), Mrs Schormann (Westport), Mrs Bennett (New Plymouth). Mrs Thompson (Waiuku), Mrs Randle (Hokitika). Mrs Marshall (Napier). Mrs Rossiter (Nireaha) Mrs Bengston' (Hamua). and two sons Messrs R. Elsmore (Pleckville) and H Elsmore (Hamua) are left to mourn their sad loss and to whom will be extended the sympathy of a large number of friends, for the late Mrs Elsmore was held in the highest esteem in the Newman district. The funeral took place at the Eketahuna cemetery on Monday. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev W. E. Moore of Pahiatua. The pall bearers were Messrs R. and H. Elsmore, L. Rossiter, F. Rossiter. A. Gyde and J. Reid. A large number of floral tributes were received. Missing Girl Found. A fifteen-year-old girl. Eunice Ruth Clapperton. who has been missing iron, her home al Hukanui since Sunday night has now been restored to the care of her parents. It appears that the girl left her home on a bicycle on Sunday afternoon, making her way' to Nireah; via Kakariki. Her activities in the Nireaha district aroused the attentioi of residents who communicated with Constable McCowan, who on investigating found that the girl had departed for a destination unknown. The nex news of her came from the Hastwell; and Mauriceville districts when she was seen by members of the Power Board staff on Wednesday. On receipt of news received by Constable McCowan from relatives of the girl yesterday he proceeded to Mauriceville and brought her to Eketahuna. Since leaving her home on Sunday the girl had been sleeping on the road-side and had had nothing whatever to eat. She appears none the worse, however, for her escapade. Personal. Mrs S. H. Scheirr, of Mt Pleasant. Canterbury, is the guest of the Rev and Mrs L. Ives. Mrs Phillips and daughter, have returned to Auckland after paying a visit to Mrs R. Gallagher. Mrs Eastwood and family, To Aroha.l who have been visiting the former's neice. Mrs R. Gallagher, has returnedl home.
