PRAGNELL CUP MATCH

(“Times-Age” Special.)

An interesting match lor the Pragnell Cup was played on the Carterton green last evening, when W. Kilgour, of the Greytown Club, followed his challenge to try to wrest the cup from the holder, W. Sorensen. The game was a keen one throughout and there was never more than a couple of points between the contestants throughout the game. As showing the keenness of the game it may be mentioned that on the eighth end the score was 8 each, on the 14th end 14 each, and again on the 17th end the score was 16 each. On the 20th end the score was 19/18 in favour of Kilgour and the 20th end saw Sorensen score one and the game ended in a draw, 19 all, and Sorensen retained the cup. It is understood another challenge awaits the holder.

The draw for the Carterton Bowling Club's Art Union was made at the club house last evening under police supervision, Mi - P. A. Cole making the draw on behalf of the club. The number of the ticket drawn was 2277. bearing the initials "8.C.”, Carrington. TENNIS CARTERTON CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Won by I. Mackie. On the Carterton Tennis Club's courts on Wednesday the final match in the club championship was played between I. Mackie and M. W. Worsfold. The weather was threatening and a slight drizzle did not makes matters any better. Possibly the damp conditions made Worsfold’s chopped drives a little more difficult to handle, but Mackie, was not disconcerted in. any way, and took the match and the 1940 championship in straight sets. 6/3. 6/2. SCHOOL CHILDREN TRIP TO EXHIBITION. The smaller classes of Carterton school children left at 9.15 this morning to attend the Centennial Exhibition. They are in charge of teachers. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ‘ -— i BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute was held on Wearesday in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, when Mrs H. Knutson presided over a fair attendance of members. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Mrs H. Knutson (re-elected); committee, Mesdames J. Archer, R. J. Grimmer, E. Hedley, E. Nix, F. Peters, G. Steffert, W. S. Steven, S. Swan, R. Wakelin and C. White. Correspondence was read from the Dominion Federation of Women’s Institutes notifying that the Biennial conference would be held in Wellington in July next, and from the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes notifying that the annual council meeting would be held in Masterton on April 24. It was agreed that the Carterton Institute should provide ten parcels of comforts for the fighting forces abroad as asked for bi' the Dominion Executive of Women’s Institutes. The points prizes for the competitions held during the year were won by Mrs A. Knutson, 1; Mrs W. S. Steven, 2. Each received a trophy. Mrs H, Knutson (president) thanked all members, especially the members of the committee for their cooperation in making the year a very successful one and also for the smooth running of the business. Mrs H. Knutson was presented with a posy as a mark of affection and appreciation of her untiring efforts for the past year. Mrs A. Knutson (secretary) and Mrs A. Pink (acting hon. treasurer) were also presented with posies and were thanked for their work during their term of office.

Church Services. St Andrew's Church services. Carterton, will be held at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. tomorrow, and at 3 p.m. at Gladstone. At the morning services and at Gladstone Communion will be taken. Tennis. The Carterton A team to play Masterton at Carterton at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow is,as follows (this game will decide the winners of the Gawith Shield): Men: M. Hobson. I. Mackie. M. Worsfold. E. Dyer, J. Dwane and D. L. Taverner. Ladies: Misses B. Peters. E. Newbould. M. Smart. M. Beaven and Mesdames B. Harrington and E. Hindley. Large Consignment of Wheat. A consignment of 2000 bags of Australian wheat has arrived at the Carterton railway station and is being to the Carterton flour mills. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Longbush at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. The Rev W. F. Stent will conduct the service.
