BABY CONTEST
MASTERTON CENTENNIAL EFFORT ENTRIES CLOSE ON TUESDAY. On Tuesday next, March 19. Masterton entries for the Centennial Baby Show, run under the auspices of the St. John Ambulance Society, will close at the Regent and Cosy Theatres, Masterton. The objects of this competition are, firstly, to raise the sum of £50,000 to further the splendid work of the St. John Ambulance Division in New Zealand and secondly, to find the champion baby of New Zealand. It is only fitting that the Centennial year is chosen for finding Now Zealand's bonniest infant, and also as the country is nt war. to aid the St. John Ambulance in its first aid work. As the future of this country depends on its children, it is hoped that the people of New Zealand will get behind this campaign for more and healthier babies. To the baby winning this competition goes the handsome prize of £5OO in cash and to the runner-up £250 in cash. Apart, however, from these two prizes is the local prize list which is as follows: —£6 first prize (goods to the value), donated by W. E. Cody. Ltd., furniture specialists; £4 second prize (cash), anonymous donor: £3 third prize (goods to the value) donated by' Arts & Crafts. Ltd.; £2 fourth prize, (goods to the value) donated by L. S. Nicol, Esq., jeweller. Queen Street; £1 fifth prize (goods to the value) donated by R. T. Woollams, Esq., chemist; 10s' (Id sixth prize (goods to the value), donated by W. G. Perry, Esq., pram and radio dealer; coronation cake (to the value of £ 1 10s) for crowning ceremony of winning baby, donated by T. Hawksworth. Esq. Owing to the generosity of the above donors, the local competition has aroused widespread interest and already the entries are heavy, but still more entries are required.
