Damage done by the bush fires which swept Victoria on Wednesday probably exceeds £300,000. Most of the fires are now under control. When the fire which destroyed most of Torquay was dying down, goods left on roadways and in evacuated houses were looted. The police later visited a militia camp and took possession of some goods. More than two hundred homes in Victoria were destroyed.. tens of thousands of sheep were lost and hundreds of persons are homeless.
