FIRE AT SOLWAY
EIGHT-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED.
FIREMAN SLIGHTLY INJURED.
An eight-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr C. W. Dickason, Short Street, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The Masterton Fire Brigade received the call from a street alarm at the corner of College and Renall streets at 3.52 o’clock. When the brigade arrived the house was enveloped with flames from end to end. With the use of two machines the brigade quickly had the flames under control, but not before the building, an eight-roomed one, had been gutted. As there was no one about at the time, owing to the Centennial celebrations at the Showgrounds, the fire had secured a good hold before it was noticed. Mr and Mrs Dickason and other members of the family were absent at the Showgrounds. A fireman was struck on the nose by a sheet of falling iron and required rhedical attention. All the furniture was destroyed, including a quantity belonging to Mr B. McMaster, a son-in-law of Mr Dickason’s. The house and contents were covered by insurance.
Mr A. Montgomery, assisted by two College boys, pushed two trucks and a car clear of a shed near the burning building but fortunately the shed escaped damage.
