Mr Heath, Auckland, was a guest a the Hotel Midland, Masterton, yesterday.
Mr H. R. Chalmers, Wellington, was appointed vice-president of the New Zealand Racing Conference at a meeting of the executive committee held last night.
Among those who paraded at the Solway Showgrounds yesterday as members of the Foresters' Lodge was Mr Edwin Selby Sent - ., \vho has been a member of the order for 62 years.
Messrs Fox (New Plymouth), Beeson (Dannevirke), Mayo, Earhorn, Morris, Crawbridge (Palmerston North), Hendry, Topp, Irving, R. Ferens, Nicholls, Lobinski and France (Wellington) were at the Empire Hotel, Masterton, yesterday.
The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, left Wellington yesterday by aeroplane for Auckland to represent the Government at a civic farewell to the Anglican Primate of New Zealand, Archbishop A. W. Averill. The Minister will return to Wellington tomorrow.
The Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, had a full day of engagements in Masterton yesterday. Accompanied by the member for the district, Mr J. Robertson, and by Mr E. N. G. Poulton, Private Secretary, Mr Parry attended a series of functions in connection with the local celebration of the Centennial. He returned to Wellington in the evening. The first full Air Force funeral held in Auckland, that of Squadron Leader David Maiyon Allan, who was killed at Mangere on Tuesday, took place yesterday.. All three services were represented, and rarely has there been in Auckland a larger gathering of airmen. for there were present fliers who were colleagues of the dead officer in the last war, as well as many young pilots whom he trained, now wearing the uniform of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. In addition there was a large attendance of representative citizens, relatives, many personal friends and members of the general public, by whom Squadron Leader Allan was held in high esteem.
The appointment is announced of Mr James Melling, town clerk of Auckland, as gift commissioner to represent the National Patriotic Fund Board with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas. It is understood that Mr Melling will have the rank of major. He will have charge of all gifts dispatched by the board for the troops, and cash will be placed at his disposal so that he will be in a position to make urgent purchases on behalf of the board for the comfort and welfare of the men wherever they may be stationed. It is stated that the board desires that. Mr Melling shall go with the Second Echelon, and it is hoped that arrangements can be completed in time for this to be possible. At the conclusion of business at the meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust last night, opportunity was taken by the chairman. Mr 11. P. Hugo, cn behalf of trustees to make the presentation of a handsome crystal salad bowl and servers to Mr J. MacFarlane Laing, in honour of his approaching marriage. In a pleasant speech Mr Hugo wished Mr Luing and his bride-to-be all ruture health and happiness, pointing out that he was the last trustee to join the chain. In returning thanks on behalf of himself and his fiancee, Miss Robinson, Mr Laing expressed appreciation to the chairman and trustees for their thoughtful action. Mr R. Krahagen pointed out that Mr Laing was the first trustee to be married while in office.
