ACHILLES SEAMEN WELCOME BY SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Yesterday morning a welcome was extended by the Martinborough.School Committee and staff to Seaman James Kane, of H.M.S. Achilles, who is an expupil of the local school. Mr. Griffiths, chairman of the school committee, welcomed the visitor on behalf of the committee, staff and pupils. Mr. Griffiths spoke of the battle in which the Achilles took part and called for three cheers for the visitor. The cheers were heartily given by the children and were followed by the singing of “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Three cheers were also accorded to Mr and Mrs. Kane, followed by musical honours. Seaman Kane thanked Mr. Griffiths, the staff and pupils for their- very warm welcome and gave an interesting resume of the part played by the Achilles in the battle, to which the children listened very attentively. After the singing of God Save the King the ladies of the Home and School Association entertained the guest of honour, Mr. and Mrs. Kane, the School Committee and staff to morning tea in' the class room. Farewell. On Monday evening friends and members gathered at the Radio Club to say cheerio to Mr. Tom Duffy, who is leaving Martinborough on Friday to take up his duties in the Air Force at Levin. Mr. K. Feist (president) on behalf of the club, wished Mr Duffy the best of luck and asked him to accept a small gift in appreciation of the work he had done for the club. Mr. Duffy suitably thanked the club, and Mr. K. Feist, after which he was accorded musical honours. Radio Club. A committee meeting of the Radio Club was held on Monday and a new member was elected and welcomed to the club. Dates wore fixed for the next two meetings, on which occasions interesting lectures would be given. Personal. Miss Joyce Grant is spending her annual holiday in Dannevirke. Miss Phyliss Howatt is visiting her parents. Mr. Spiers, Dyerville, has recently returned from a three weeks' holiday in the South Island.
