GREYTOWN
LEAGUE OF MOTHERS FIRST MEETING OF YEAR. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Greytown League of Mothers held its first meeting for the year m the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs Bull presided over a good attendance of members. Several apologies for absence were received; also letters of acknowledgment from three members. Members stood in silence out of sympathy for Mrs Horton, who had suffered bereavement.
Mrs Bull read an interesting letter she had received from Lady Alice Ferguson acknowledging the book, “Brave Days," sent from the Greytown branch as a Christmas gift. Mrs Knell was thanked for the use of her house and garden for the Garden Party last November. Mrs York read the thought for the month.
The three essentials were: "Something to do," "something to love,” and "something to hope for.” The choir rendered several glees which were much appreciated. Miss Askew sang two solos very nicely. "Farewell to Summer" and "Here is April.” Mrs H. G. Carter was accompaniste.
The choir' members are making a trip to Wellington tomorrow to the Exhibition to attend the League of Mothers meeting in the Assembly Hall and are taking part in the massed choir of 300 voices, under the baton of Mrs Ginn. The Rev. Bloomfield gave an Instructive address on "The Development and Emancipation of Womanhood.”
Before he started his address, Mrs Bull thanked him for his most inspiring address on March 2, when League members attended the annual church service at the Presbyterian Church, his sermon being "The Mother and the Home.” The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Knell, Wiggins, Horton and Johnson. The meeting closed with the National Anthem. PATRIOTIC FUNDS HOUSE TO HOUSE CANVASS. A meeting of the Greytown citizens Patriotic Committee was held in the Council Chambers last evening. The Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, presided and there was a good attendance of the committee. Among those who attended were Messrs W. Grigg and A. H. Humphrey, representing the South Wairarapa Working Men's Club; Mr W. G. K. Wiggins, of the Farmers’ Union; Mrs Beu, of the Women’s Division, of the Farmers’ Union; Mr Lauri Thompson, of Morison’s Bush, and Mr O A. Cadwallader, representing the Greytown Dairy Co. Several apologies for absence were received. The chairman stated that the meeting was called to further the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army campaign for the National Patriotic’Fund. It was resolved that a house to house canvass be inaugurated for the appeal, the allocation of areas being:— Top Main Street, Mrs Horton; business area, Mr H. G. Carter; from Kelties corner to Railway, Main Street, Mrs A Johnson; Kuratawhiti Street, Mesdames Wiggins and J. F. Thompson; West Street, Mrs Maddeson; Wood Street, Kempton Road, Mrs D. C. Fairbrother; Papawai, Mrs A. D. Buren; McMaster and Jellicoe streets,. Mrs Brown; East Street, Mr S. Shedden; Ahikouka, Miss B. Cadwallader; Battersea and Ward’s Line, Mr R. CO’Neale; Moroa, Kempton Road and Cross's Line, Mrs V. Kempton; Moki and Fabain’s Road, Mr N. Skeet; local bodies, sporting institutions and Friendly Societies, Mr J. F. Thompson. It was also decided to hold a farewell to the members of the Second Echelon on Easter Monday, March 25, in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. Mr A. P. Wallis offered to solder- any tins being sent to soldiers. Mr Wallis will do these free of charge every Friday. Wool For Balaclavas. The Mayoress, Mrs A. W. Horton, has received a supply of khaki wool sufficient to make 24 balaclavas. Personal. Miss M. Eccles, of the local PowerBoard office, has left for Wellington on holiday. Miss B. Shedden is relieving her. , , . Mrs A. H. York has returned from Levin. . ~ Mrs F Wise, of Wellington, rs visiting her daughter. Mrs J. Robb, East Street. Donation to Red Cross. The proceeds of the function held at Morison’s Bush Hall on Monday amounting to £6, have been handed to the local Red Cross Committee.
