MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held last night. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr M. Hardie, presided in the absence of the Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill. There were also present: Councillors M. Mulvaney, W. H. Corkhill. G. P. Cotter, P. R Plummer and T. A. Hamilton. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors C. R. Holmes, D. J. Green and W. F. Gundrie. Aletter was received from the District Patriotic Committee advising of an allotment ol knitting wool to the borough for the knitting of balaclavas. The general manager of the Greytown Picture Company, wrote stating that the Town Hall was to be examined by inspectors, and asking for an extra month’s lease, from March 31. The request was granted. The Martinborough Amateur Athletic and Horse Sports Committee wrote asking permission to use water ;cn the track cn the sports day. Permission was granted subject to the permission of the leasee being obtained.
The Department of Internal Affairs wrote fixing April 1 for the registration of dogs. The Town Hall committee reported that the paint on the southern wall of (he Town Hall required attention. It was decided to notify the contractors of the guarantee as required in the contract.
The ranger reported having impounded 11 head of stock.
Attention was drawn to wandering stock in the northern portion of the borough. It was resolved to notify the ranger and to instruct the overseer to act accordingly.
Complaint was received, of the frequency of fires occurring in a builders’ yards when burning rubbish. It was decided to strictly enforce the bylaw. Arrangements were made for the local Centennial celebrations and it was decided that a special meeting be held on March 27, to complete matters. Receipts since last meeting totalled £.942. Accounts for £873 were passed. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES MEETING OF GARDEN CIRCLE. There was a fair attendance of members at Mrs Mark Hardie’s residence for the February meeting of the Martmborough Women’s Institute. The winners of the year’s competitions were.’Best Hower in garden: Mrs McAlpine, 1; Mrs Hardinge, 2; Mrs Knell, 3. Shrubs: Mrs Tyler and Mrs Boyd, tied. It was decided to hold a competition for roses also each month, and Mrs Tyler has promised a rose bush for the winner of most points. The monthly competition was won by Mrs Skill, Mrs Hardinge being second, and Mrs Knell third. For shrubs, Mrs Boyd and Mrs Hardinge tied for first prize. Dyerville. The Dyerville Women’s Institute held its annual meeting on Friday with a fair attendance. Mesdames Jolly and Chapman, representing the Red Cross, displayed and explained the goods required for Red Cross purposes, and received a hearty vote of thanks. A report of the Box Group was given by the leader. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs A. Jamieson; vicepresident, Mrs Campbell Smith; secretary, Miss K. Martin; committee, Mesdames L. and J. Harris, O'Keefe, Wilkie, Bain, Garrity, Chas. Smith, Wrigley, and Miss K. Smith. A silver cup has been donated by ihe president for the winner of points prize for best bloom of the year, to be won three times.
Mrs Wrigley won the competition, and Mesdames Rowlands and Stewart were hostesses.
