AUCKLAND WATERSIDERS RESUME
FOLLOWING ON WARNING BY CONTROLLER.
JOBS TO BE MANNED IN ANY CASE.
(By Telegraph—Press. Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Stating that they now were employed by the Government and not by shipowners and stevedores, the members of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union decided today to return to normal work at 8 o’clock tomorrow morning. The decision was practically unanimous. “Our cuds have boon achieved and there is no longer any dispute.” said a union official after the meeting. ‘•There is no bar to our returning to work immediately.” The meeting started at 8 o'clock and lasted for three hours. The attendance was large. Mr R. E. Price (Waterfront Controller), spoke for an hour and 20 minutes, stating that it was his intention to open the port tomorrow, whether the union men worked or not. A call would be made for union labour and if this was not forthcoming his instructions from the Government were to have all the jobs manned. OVERTIME REFUSED POSITION IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, This Day. Over 400 members of the Wellington Watersiders’ Union refused overtime last night. Nine ships arc affected, five of them overseas vessels. The engagement of labour and handling of cargo proceeded normally this morning. A meeting of employers of waterside •labour is being held this afternoon to consider the situation on the Wellington waterfront. Overtime calls for between 600 and 700 men are listed for this evening.
