The coal strike which began today is causing considerable concern in official and business circles, and strong representations have been made to the Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, to intervene to prevent a spreading and a dislocation of industry and the war transport services. Mr Menzies today promised to discuss the dispute with Cabinet. Meanwhile the miners' officials are continuing their organisation for a protracted struggle in co-operation with the other unions.' Approximately 16,000 men, or 90 per cent of the mine-workers, are involved in the strike. The waterside workers’, locomotive drivers’. and transport workers’ unions today promised delegates from the mining unions that they will refuse to handle or transport coal produced by nonunion labour.
