GRAIN & PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKET REPORT. <By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 8. Grain and produce markets in Christchurch have shown little change this week. Most of the wheat harvest has been handled, except some of the stacked grain, and that is being held for the increment which goes on to the price next month. Offerings of ryegrass are still scarce, and merchantmen are prepared to pay up to 7s for choicest lines. Two poor seasons in succession have made supplies of good ryegrass exceptionally short. Last season germination tests showed poor results, and this season the crop was affected by the dry autumn. The rains came too late to save many areas for seed. Only odd lines of cocksfoot are offering yet, and these continue to be of very light weight. Growers who have better seed seem content to hold it in the meantime in the hope of securing higher prices. A few potato growers whose crops are on heavy land have reported blight and scab, but generally the crop appears to be in excellent order and a plentiful supply seems assured. Merchants are offering growers from £3 to £3 5s a ton.
