BIG PROCESSION

PROCEEDING TO SOLWAY SHOWGROUNDS ALTERATION IN CENTENNIAL PLANS. NEED OF ADEQUATE SPACE FOR DISPLAYS. A decision to make the destination of next Thursday’s procession in Masterton the Solway Showgrounds instead of the Park, was made by the General Centennial Committee at a meeting last night, sub, jeer to the consent of the Masterton A. and P. Association. The chairman, Mr T. Jordan, presided, there also being present Messrs G. G. Hancox, E. M. Hodder, J. C. D. Mackley, D. Costello, G. Whyborn, 11. M. Boddington, E. G. Coddington, C. R. Mabson. the Rev H. Taeapa and the secretary, Mr G. T. O'Hara Smith. Mr Hodder explained that owing to the vast nature of the procession only a fleeting glimpse of the wonderful array of exhibits would be possible if the procession was to be held from Queen Street to the Masterton Park. As the gates were not wide enough to admit motorised exhibits, only part of the procession would be able to enter the Park. In view of the fact that such an outstanding display had been accumulated, and would perhaps not be seen again, it was considered by the procession committee that the public would be able to see the display with greater ease at the Showgrounds. It was reported that all arrangements were in train for the other celebrations, which promise to be of a high standard. It was stressed that no advertising propaganda or trade displays would be permitted, as the procession would depict. the progress of the district. Votes of thanks were accorded Mr R. F. R. Beetham. Brancepeth. for the donation of a porker, and to Messrs C. E. Daniell. Ltd, for wood for its cooking in Maori style, at the Maori celebrations at To Ore Ore on Sunday week. •It was proposed that all business houses be asked to display flags and bunting for the whole of the week, commencing on Monday. The proceeds of rhe fashion display would be devoted to the Patriotic Fund for the farewelling of local soldiers. If the displays prove popular enough, it will be repeated on Wednesday afternoon and evening. Any old settler taking part in the celebrations requiring transport is requested to communicate with the Town Clerk, who will make suitable arrangements. SERVICE TOMORROW GATHERING IN THE PARK. OPENING CENTENNIAL EVENT. Tomorrow will mark the opening of the Centennial celebrations in Masterton, when a united thanksgiving service will be held in the Park, conducted by the Masterton Ministers’ Association.
