ITALIAN COLLIERS
DETENTION 8V BRITAIN PRESS COMMENT IN ROME RESERVED. SUGGESTED COMPROMISE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. March 7. The eight Italian vessels detained by Britain are believed to be carrying 60,000 tons of coal. Another 50,000 tons at least has arrived in seven more Italian ships, which were detained at the control base last night. A message from Rome emphatically denies an earlier report that extra police were stationed at the British Embassy. The Italian Press continues to feature the detention of the colliers, but the comment is reserved. “Piccolo” has given prominence to a suggestion in London that Britain lend Italy several hundred thousand sterling for the purchase of British coal while compromising over products Italy desired Britain to accept. FOURTEEN SO FAR ALL BUT ONE DETAINED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY. March 7. Five more Italian ships, believed to be carrying coal of German origin, have been detained in the Downs, making the total now fourteen, of which one has been released.
