FIRE FIGHTING TESTS
NATIONAL DEMONSTRATIONS AT PETONE. CARTERTON SECOND IN GILBERD MEMORIAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) 1 WELLINGTON. This Day. Two hundred firemen from 51 brigades arc taking part in national centennial demonstrations of the United Fire Brigades' Association of New Zealand, which began yesterday at the Petone Recreation Ground. The demonstrations will continue today and tomorrow. Entries for the events are the highest since the demonstrations were hold at Hokitika in 1929. This is in spite of five brigades which competed last year being unable to send teams through men enlisting. A now event for four mon with an extension ladder has been included this year. In this the men have to attack a fire on a ground floor, and then extinguish an outbreak on an upper floor. Excellent times were returned in yesterday's events, and -N. G. Muir (Hastings) broke the New Zealand record for the one-man coupling, for which the Gilberd Memorial Shield is awarded. Muir completed the test in 49 3-ssoc. which is two-fifths of a second bettor than the previous time established in Wanganui last year. Results: —
