VANDALS’ PATRIOTISM
MAKING WAR ON BEAUTY. “It is very surprising at a time like this, when everybody's strength of mind and body is specially needed for helpful work, some persons in many districts of New Zealand continue more than ever to destroy shrubs and trees in parks and gardens," says a member of the Forest and Bird Protection Society. "Some of these vandals—who arc not children—spend plenty of energy in their destructive operations, for they have choped down trees which had fairly thick trunks, and have deeply hacked others. “The very annoying mischief in public reserves is another reminder of the need of citizens’ vigilance committees to co-operate with the police. It seems that the outbreaks of vandalism in many localities of the North and South Islands will not be checked until some culprits are caught and well and truly punished.”
