RECOVERY IN EWE PRICES

FAT CATTLE IN OVER SUPPLY.

A heavy entry of sheep was again forward at today’s Addington stock market, and about 17,000 of the 28,000 yarded were breeding ewes. Breeding ewes have been selling at steadily reducing prices at the fairs, but todaj r there was a sharp recovery and values were better than at the last Addington sale by Is 6d a head for most classes, and on the bedrock rates of the Waiau fair of the preceding day by 3s to 3s 6d in a number of cases. The best of the Southland Romney cross two-tooths sold to 40s 6d. North Island similar entries to 34s 6d, Canterbury entries to 37s 3d, and local s.m. entries to 245. Fat lambs solds at up to schedule rates for the better sorts, but the light lambs were slightly easier. One of the principal works was not operating because of flood damage. The fat sheep entry totalled 8000, and after the first part of the sale values eased by up to Is 6d for export ewes, and to Is for the better classes of the others. Good wethers sold at from 26s to 29s', with the tops going to 34s 9d. Station wethers sold down to 17s. The best of the ewes sold at from 22s to 245, with the tops going to 27s 6d. Export sorts ranged from 10s to 16s.

Fat cattle were in over-supply, and there was a slight easing all round. The best of the steers sold at from £l4 10s to £l6. with a few of the tops going to £2O. Most of the steers were of medium class, and ranged from £l2 to £l4. The best of the cows made from £9 to £lO, and the heifers £1 more. Fat pigs sold erratically. Porkers were weaker by 3s to 4s a head, but choppers were better and baconers unchanged. Porkers made 34s 6d to 54s Gd, an average price a lb of Gjd to 7d, and baconers 59s 6d to 98s 6d. an average price a lb of 6id to 7d.
