The Hon W. Lee Martin. Minister of Agriculture, left Wellington Tor the Waikato by the Limited express last night.
The Wellington branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute entertained at afternoon tea yesterday, Mr D. Macaskill. who recently retired from the position of senior inspector under the Wellington Education Board. Mr Macaskill. who was accompanied by Mrs Macaskill, was presented with a set of bowls in a case.

Jordan, at the annual conference of the Municipal Association of New Zealand in Wellington yesterday, when referring; to the enlistment of three mayors. Mr J. R. Hanan, Invercargill, Mr A. T. Reiman. The ITiino ’Minister, tlie 111 Hon M. .1. Savage celebrated his sixty-eighth birthday today. It is his fifth since he assumed office. Mr Savage is an Australian by birth but a New Zealander by many years' adoption. Succeeding the late Mr H. E. Holland as leader i.f the Labour Parly. Mr Savage became Prime Minister in 1935. lie visited England in 1937 for the Coronation and tlie Imperial Conference of that year. Widespread sympathy for him was expressed last August when lie underwent an operation, and since then his health lias compelled him to forgo part of liis public duties, which have been assumed by tlie Deputy-Prime Minister, the Hon P. Fraser.
