Mr Savage is an Australian by birth but a New Zealander by many years' adoption. Succeeding the late Mr H. E. Holland as leader i.f the Labour Parly. Mr Savage became Prime Minister in 1935. lie visited England in 1937 for the Coronation and tlie Imperial Conference of that year. Widespread sympathy for him was expressed last August when lie underwent an operation, and since then his health lias compelled him to forgo part of liis public duties, which have been assumed by tlie Deputy-Prime Minister, the Hon P. Fraser.
