BEACH TRAGEDY

YOUNG GIRL DISAPPEARS AT OTAKI. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OTARI, March 5. While swimming with about 20 others at Otaki Beach this afternoon. Doreen Gertrude Matthews, aged 13. got out of her depth at about 4.15. and disappeared. She is presumed to have been drowned. Police patrolled the shore till a late hour tonight without I(suits. Immediately the girl disappeared an alarm was given, and two men working nearby. Messrs Nuggent and Scrimgcour. went into the surf. Their attempt to discover the girl was unsu&cessful, as was another attempt made with line and reel. Maureen Teague, who was swimming close to Doreen Matthews, was brought ashore exhausted. Doreen Matthews was an inmate of the Feltham Children's Homo. Otaki Beach.
