APPLES AS MISSILES

PROTEST BY VICTORIAN GROWERS. CONTROLLED MARKETING UNPOPULAR. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE. March 5. More than 100 growers today demonstrated against the Government regulations requiring them to deliver their fruit to the Apple and Pear Board for the purpose of controlled marketing. Exciting incidents occurred in the vicinity of the Victoria Markets, where inspectors for the board and police who were commissioned to keep order were pelted with apples. Growers and market customers hooted every move to gain possession of the fruit, which was deliberately tipped on the road. At one stage 800 cases of apples were strewn over the road. Anybody attempting to buy from the Government enclosure was heckled and pelted with apples. The chaotic conditions prevailed for a couple of hours, and 14 policemen finally restored order.
