CENTENNIAL EXHIBITS
COMING DISPLAY IN MASTERTON. Among a large number of interesting historical exhibits which will be on display during the Centennial celebrations week will be a hand-carved Maori flute, the only musical instrument the Maoris ever had. This is a very rare instrument, of great value. To the layman, how the flute was played seems a mystery. Also on display will be a flag presented at Rotorua by the Duke of Edinburgh, when he visited New Zealand in 1869, to Messrs Taiawhio Tikawenga To Tau, chieftain of the Ngati Kahungunii (Wairarapa) tribe and of tlie Tumupuhia and Hinepane subtribes, and W Paraone, on behalf of the Wairarapa Maoris. The flag was named Wairarapa No 1 by the Duke, The flag, which lias a great historical interest', was taken to England by the Maori contingent attending Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Mrs J. L. Murray, of Church Street, Masterton, has for exhibition during Centennial celebrations week a copy of the first newspaper published in Wellington—the "New Zealand Gazette, dated June 20 1840. the eleventh issue of volume No 1.
The W.F.C.A. Ltd. wish to' appeal to the public of Masterton and surrounding districts for the loan of old relics, pictures, photographs, clothes, and any article of historical interest to enable a window display to be made during ’he local centennial celebrations week.
