DISTRICT ODD FELLOWS
CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON. WAR RELIEF PROPOSALS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The annual District Conference of Manchester Unity Odd Fellows was held in the Odd Fellows Chambers, Clyde Quay, Wellington, on Saturday, Grand Master Geo W. Craddock presiding over the following deputies. Bros W. B. Brown, G. C. Turner, W. R. Treadwell, R. N. Wickens (Brittania), C. H. Hicks. G. Forbes. W. A. Wishart (Antipodean), T. H. Norris (Lower Hutt), W. F. Courtenay (Kilbirnie), Sister M. Chapman (Sister Wallis), S. Eades (Newtown), W. P. Holt (Johnsonville), C. D. Harris (Levin), G. S. Bruce (Carterton). F. Dennis (Greytown), P. M. Smith and R. Baikie (Masterton), L. Kitchen (Pahiatua), R. Farrow (Eketahuna), C. J. De Lacey (Featherston), Alb Smith (Martinborough), N. J. Sherwood and J. Rushton (Petone), C. G. Bird (Upper Hutt), E. W. Guise. District Secretary. The conference went into committee and exhaustively discussed a war I members’ relief measure, at the conclusion of which certain recommendations were decided upon to be submitted to a special conference of the Board of Directors to be held in Wellington on May 1. The election of officers resulted: — District Grand Master, Bro A. J. B. Foote; District Deputy G.M. Bro. C. O. Jorgenson; Management Committee: Bros R. Farrow (Eketahuna), R. Baikie tMasterton), G. S. Bruce (Carterton), W. R. Treadwell, W. P. Holt and C. H. Hicks (Wellington); Examining and Relieving Officer, Bro Geo Bell; District Book Examiner Auditor. Bro F. A. Davis, Assistant Auditor, Bro J. W. Russell; Delegates to 8.M.C.. Bros J. L. Stewart, A. J. B. Foote, C. O. Jorgenson and E. W. Guise. The thanks of the conference was accorded members of Sister Wallis Lodge for their provision of morning and afternoon tea.
The newly elected officers were instilled into office by the Retiring District Grand Master and accorded hearty lodge honours. P.D.M.’s Bros P. M. Smith addressed the G.M.-elect and J. H. Langley, the D.D.G.M. P.D.G.M. Bro Frank Dennes. presented the retiring G.M. with a P.D.G.M. Collar and the jewel as recognition of his services rendered during his terms of office. At the conclusion of the conference business, P.D.G.M. Bro C. J. De Lacey, in a lodge of Past Grand Masters, advanced the retiring G.M. to the Degree of his office.
HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION. At the annual meeting of the Manchester Unity Odd Fellows. Wellington District Hospital Association held in Wellington on Friday evening at which Bro C. J. De Lacey. G. S. Bruce. F. Dennes. P.M. Smith. J. H. Langley and R. Farrow were present representing Wairarapa Lodges, a proposition was submitted by the Wairarapa Past Grands' Lodge, asking the Association to arrange with the hospitals, treatment and benefits, outside those already in existence for X-ray treatment, massage, dressings and ambulance. The meeting was sympathetic, and a recommendation to the new management committee was passed requesting it to endeavour to make an arrangement with the hospitals in respect to same.
The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. A substantial credit balance of funds as at December 31, 1939 was shown. Regret was expressed by the meeting at the retirement of the secretarytreasurer. Bro F. A. Davis, and it was unanimously decided to place on record appreciation of the splendid service rendered the association during his term as secretary-treasurer. The election of officers resulted: President. Bro J. A. B. Foote; vicepresident Bro J. L. Stewart. Management Committee. Bros F. A. Davis. S. Eades, J. W. Russell. N. J. Sherwood. R. Riddel. G. W. Leggett: SecretaryTreasurer. Bro W. R. Treadwill. P. M. SMITH SHIELD. A pleasant, function was performed at the conclusion of the District Conference of Odd Fellows on Saturday afternoon, when it became known that the P. M. Smith Shield for the lodge
initiating the largest percentage of members during the year had been won by Rose of Sharon Lodge. Upper Hutt. This is the third year in succession this lodge has won the shield, and very complimentary reference was made by the Grand Master to the fact. In accepting the shield on behalf of his lodge, the secretary, Bro C. G. Bird, thanked Bro Smith, Masterton. for the great interest he took in Manchester Unity affairs, and for his fine shield. He was pleased his lodge had again been successful in winning the shield, mid they would endeavour to hold it. at the termination of the current year. (applause).
