GOODS VEHICLES

NEW FITNESS CERTIFICATE ■ SYSTEM. DEFENDED BY COMMISSIONER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Improvements in the system of issuing certificates of fitness for goods vehicles, that have been brought about by an amendment to the transport licensing regulations which came into operation last Friday, wore referred to by the Commissioner of Transport in a statement today. Mr Laurcnsen said there appeared to be some misunderstanding regarding the new procedure and that the contention, that the Transport Department would do only half the vehicle inspection work while collecting the same fee on an annual basis, was quite erroneous. The change should considerably facilitate vehicle inspection work, not only by relieving officers 01. the necessity of collecting fees at each inspection but by enabling all licensed vehicles in each town to be inspected during the same visit, irrespective of the date of payment of fees. In the case of many operators the change would mean a financial saving, as the annual fee would be collected on the vehicle authority basis and not on the number of vehicles in use. Further, when a vehicle was replaced or another one added to a fleet, it would he inspected and a certificate of fitness would be issued without involving the operator in any further cost.
