NO BASIS FOR PEACE
ACCORDING TO HITLER TALK WITH AMERICAN ENVOY. SWEEPING ASSERTIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON. Marell 2. Shortly after his arrival in Berlin yesterday President. Roosevelt’s envoy, Air Welles, had a conversation with the Nazi Foreign Minister. Herr von Ribbentrop, and today he visited Herr Hitler. A Berlin communique states: "The Fuehrer received Mi’ Welles, who was accompanied by Mr Alexander Kirk (United States Charge d’AffairesL They had a fairly long conversation. Herr von Ribbentrop was present. A company of Herr Hitler’s bodyguard rendered military honours on the arrival and departure of Mr Welles.” In bright ’ sunshine hundreds of people watched a double line of military guards salute Mr Welles, who began the conference with Herr Hitler at 11.14 a.m. It is stated that together with Mr Kirk, and Herr von Ribbentrop, Herr Meisner, residential Secretary of State, was also present. Mr Welles remained at the Chancellery for 80 minutes, and he returned to the American Embassy with a stern look on his face.
The Berlin correspondent of the British United Press says that Mr Welles assumed the customary role of listener to Herr Hitler, who discussed the restoration of German-American relations and emphasised the necessity of German leadership in Central Europe. Herr Hitler declared that no basis for peace existed because Britain wanted to crush Germany, who was fighting to release the world from the British imperialist grip. This the United States had apparently failed to understand. Herr Hitler contended that the United States was not following a strictly neutral course, for which reason Germany was compelled to be wary of all the democracies. The German radio reports that FieldMarshal Goering has returned to Berlin after a week's tour of the Western Front. Mr Welles will meet him tomorrow. CALL ON GOERING. (Received This Day. 10.10 a.in.) BERLIN. March 3. Herr Rudolf Hess received Mr Sumner Welles, who, after an hour’s talk, went to Karin Hall to see Marshal Goering.
