ARTIFICIAL FIBRES
USE IN UNITED KINGDOM. That the use of artificial fibres in the United Kingdom in conjunction with wool is comparatively slight is indicated by reports recently issued by the Import Duties Advisory Committee. The figures are admittedly somewhat behind the times in that they do not go beyond 1937, but in that year the woollen and worsted trades of the United Kingdom used 1,638,0001 b of rayon staple fibre as compared with with a total of 529,000,0001 b clean wool, in addition to big weights of recovered wool and rags 2,455,0001 b of rayon yarn (continuous filament) was used, and also 162,0001 b of staple fibre yarn. Considerably bigger quantities of artificial fibres were used, however, in the hosiery industry. Rayon yarn in 1937 was consumed to the extent of 20,666,0001 b, while the quantity of woollen and worsted yarn used was 63,763,0001b.|
