BEST-PRODUCING COWS
DISTINCTIVE AWARD MADE. JERSEY MERIT LIST. a, Jersey cows in New South Wales with the distinction of a butter-fat production of 1001 b. or more in excess of the official age standard, will, in future, be recognised as Advanced Register of Merit cows. A decision of the State branch of the Australian Jersey Herd Society at its triannual meeting, held in January, to create such a register will provide a uniform formula by which all dairy breeds might apropriately recognise heavy butter-fat producers. At the suggestion of the United Pure Bred Dairy Cattle Breeders’ Association of New South Wales, a sub-com-mittee of the Jersey Society examined a proposal that the Guernsey Cattle Society of Australasia (New South Wales branch), to the- effect that all societies should adopt one standard for Advanced Register of Merit, namely, that to qualify a cow must produce at least 1001 b. butter-fat in excess of her age standard. The association had approved this society’s proposal in principle, after which it was referred to affiliated societies for consideration.
The triannual meeting of the Jersey Herd Society adopted a recommendation by the sub-committee that it was in agreement with the proposed uniform standard, and that, moreover, the branch committee of the society should institute a register for Advanced Register of Merit Cows, to qualify for which it was necessary for animals to produce at least 1001 b. butter-fat in excess of their age standard. This decision is to be conveyed to the Federal Council with a view to consideration being given to its wider Australian adoption. A list of names of all Advanced Register of Merit cows to qualify in accordance with the society’s decision is to be included in subsequent issues of the test booklet published by the New South Wales branch. All eligible cows which have completed their official test since the inception of the official testing scheme will be listed. The basis upon which the 1001 b. in excess of the age standard is to be calculated will be on the present-day official age standards.
The United Pure Bred Dairy Cattle Breeders’ Association aimed at having one standard adopted by all societies, thereby giving the designation universal status.
