RECORD FLOOD
IN WAIMAKARIRI RIVER PROTECTIVE WORKS STAND TEST. PEOPLE IN TWO SETTLEMENTS LEAVE HOMES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. March 1. Receiving an abnormal testing in the biggest flood on record, the Waimakariri River Trust protective works camo triumphantly through and sdved the city and adjacent farm lands from disaster. River Trust men assisted families in two settlements to leave their homes when the flood became menacing early last evening. More than 350 men were employed all night in patrolling the banks and carrying out protective work. A big gang was engaged in- filling sandbags, which were rushed to spots where the flood threatened to cut its way through the banks. One gang was marooned for the night on an isolated bank ten miles upstream from camp. They were able to escape this morning when the waters subsided.
