SWIMMING SPORTS
COMBINED PRIMARY SCHOOLS CENTRAL WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. WEST RUNNERS-UP. The annual swimming sports of the Masterton primary schools were held yesterday afternoon in the Dixon Street Baths. In spite of the inclement weather the sports were the scene of keen enthusiasm displayed by both spectators and competitors. The following championships were decided: Champion school, Central; runner-up. West. F. Sexton, of Solway, swam several excellent races to gain the senior boys' championship, with E. Hollings. of Central, runner-up. Maureen Cruickshanks, of West School, won the girls' senior championship, with some outstanding performances. Mary Stewart, West, was runner-up. The junior boys' championship was won by Ken Masters (Central) with Michael Daniell (West) runner-up. In the girls’ junior championship Joyce McCormack (Central) was champion with her team mate, Margaret Lyttle, run-ner-up.
The running of the sports was in the capable hands of Messrs Boys. Munn and Tamblyn. Thanks are due to Mr J. V. Dolan for his services as judge of the diving and breaststroke events, also to the baths custodian and Mr J. P. Farrell for assistance in the judging and recording duties.
