CARTERTON

BOROUGH WORK SEALING PROPOSALS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At last night's meeting of the Carterton Borough Council it was decided to purchase 1000 gallons of tar to complete works that are already in progress, before wet weather sets in. _The railway crossing at Belvedere, which lias recently received attention is to be tarred and a dressing of j-inch chips rolled in. NOXIOUS WEEDS ACTION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. It was resolved at last night's meetingof the Borough Council that all noxious weeds in Belvedere Street must be properly destroyed, property owners to be given notice to this effect. PERSONAL VISITORS TO THE TOWN. Mr and Mrs H. Barlow, well known in Carterton, are visitors to the town, looking up old friends. They leave for Wellington on Thursday to spend a day or two there before returning to New Plymouth. Mr Geo. Stoodley, of Palmerston North, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. His brother is in the Greytown Hospital. Mrs W.-W. Mansfield is staying with her daughter, Mrs W. S. King, Broadway.

Mr R. J. D. Wallis, of Hawera, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. Mr W. Stoodley, who is an inmate of Greytown Hospital and who recently underwent an operation is reported to be progressing. Mr W. Wadham, of Brooklyn Road, Carterton, who lately underwent an operation in the Wellington Hospital, is well on the way to recovery.

PRESENTATION R.S.A. GATHERING. Several members of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association yesterday paid a visit to the residence of Mr H. H. L. Meyrick, for the purpose of making a presentation to Mrs Meyrick. Mr A. T. Murray, president of the association, referred to the work done by Mrs Meyrick as a member of the ladies’ committee over a number of years and it was the interest shown by Mrs Meyrick that prompted the presentation. On behalf of the R.S.A., Mr Murray asked Mrs: Meyrick to accept an electric reading lamp. Mr and Mrs Meyrick left for Palmerston North today where Mr Meyrick will go into the clerk’s office at the railway station. Mrs Meyrick thanked Mr Murray and members for their kind thought and for the presentation. PATRIOTIC FUNDS CAMPAIGN IN CARTERTON. At a meeting of the Carterton committee of the Fighting Services Welfare Appeal a plan of campaign was decided upon and a list of canvassers submitted. The following areas were decided upon: —Kent Street to borough boundary, Mrs B. Thompson; Rhodes Street and High Street to Kent Street. Wyndham Street, Mrs L. Fairbrother; Rhodes Street to Belvedere Road to railway station, Miss O. Barber; Park Road, Dixon Street. Tyne Street, Holloway Street, Mrs Pink; business area, Captain O. L. Ojala; Pembroke Street to station, Mrs Gustofson; Garrison Street, High Street to Victoria Street, Wakelin Street, Mrs Wakelin; Rexwood Street, Clifton Avenue, Mrs Beaven; Richmond Road, High Street to Howard Street, King Street. Mr Nicholls; Howard Street and High Street to borough boundary, Mr Edmonds; Costley Street. Brooklyn Road, Mr E.. Fairbrother. It was resolved that Captain Ojala make a tour of the Wairarapa South County and interview overseers for the following districts: —Matarawa, Dalefield; Belvedere, Carrington, Mount Holdsworth; Clareville, Waingawa. East Taratahi; Parkvale. Waihakeke; Gladstone; Ahiaruhe, Ponatahi; Te Wharu. It was resolved that a shop day be held in Carterton on Friday. March 15. FAREWELL GATHERING POPULAR STATIONMASTER. A happy function took place at the Carterton Railway Station yesterday, when Mr H. H. L. Meyrick. who is leaving today to take up duties at Palmerston North, was farewelled. Mr Meyrick has been connected with the railways for many years and eight years ago was transferred from the Ohakune transport office to the position of stationmaster at Carterton. He was born in Carterton and had most of his schooling in the district. Mr Meyrick carried out his duties at Carterton in a faithful and painstaking manner until he was stricken with a serious illness twelve months ago and had to enter hospital at,Wanganui where he was a patient for some considerable time. He has been a long time recuperating and in the meantime relieving officers carried on his work at Carterton until Mr T. Sullivan was appointed stationmaster. Mr Meyrick has now practically recovered from his illness and has been transferred to the clerk’s office, Palmerston North, in the meantime. He leaves today for his new appointment.

Yesterday, at the Carterton Railway

Station, he was farewelled by the railway staff, carriers, and'stock buyers. On behalf of those assembled Mr T. Sullivan spoke very warmly of Mr Meyrick’s capabilities as a railway servant and said all were glad he had recovered sufficiently to resume duties. On behalf of those, present he had pleasure in asking Mr Meyrick’s acceptance of an automatic electric iron. He wished Mr and Mrs Meyrick good health and prosperity in the future. Messrs V. •L. Robinson and W. Kempton spoke on behalf of the stock buyers and Mr W. A. Pinfold on behalf of the carriers, all eulogising the work done by Mr Meyrick while he was stationmaster at Carterton. Mr R. Spora, of the railway surfacemen’s department, also added his eulogy. Mr Meyrick’s health was toasted amid applause and he feelingly returned thanks to everyone and said his relationship with everyone at the Carterton Railway Station had always been pleasant. He would ever remember his associations with a loyal staff and the kind people of Carterton and district. BOWLING BOOTH CUP COMPETITION. There will be no Booth Cup match against Greytown son Saturday next owing to the Carterton Centennial celebrations. USE OF MARGARINE PROTEST BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. The gas committee’s report submitted to the Borough Council meeting last evening contained a protest against the use of margarine instead of butter in the cooking demonstrations, carried out in the New Zealand Gas Court at the Centennial exhibition. It was thought that New Zealand butter should be boosted as much as possible and the use of margarine for the purpose of cooking demonstrations was considered to be bad business. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to those in charge of this department pointing out what the Carterton Gas Committee considers that the use of margarine was not in the best interest of one of New Zealand’s primary products. Railway Crossing. The staff of the Carterton Borough Council was busy this morning tarsealing the approach to the Belvedere railway crossing. When the work is completed it will be a great boon to road users in this particular vicinity. County Road Work. The preparatory work in connection with the sealing of Belvedere Road from Cobden Road to the borough boundary has been completed, by the county workmen. The length will be sealed with bitumen and metal chips. Child’s Injuries. An unfortunate and painful accident occurred to a daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Chapman, of Carrington, on Saturday, when the child had the ball of an eye pierced by a staple. Dr. W. J. C. Wells was called to attend to the sufferer and found the child's eye badly injured. After temporary treatment the patient was ordered to Wellington Hospital whither she was taken yesterday. It is not certain if the child will loose the sight of the eye or not.
