The death has occurred in Auckland after a long illness of Constable R. H. Moss,. who was in charge of the Waipawa police district for some four years up to about 12 months ago. when he was obliged to relinquish his duties because of failing health. Constable Moss went to Waipawa from Porangahau. Among his activities in the town outside official duties were his activities in running the Waipawa municipal band a few years ago and his work as secretary of the Waipawa Savage Club. A Forester of long standing, he. took a prominent part in the activities of the Waipawa lodge, and he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family.

During the holiday period many motor-cars are carried between Wellington and Lyttelton for tourists wishing to see the other island by road travel. Recent figures show that freight charges by steamer between Wellington and Lyttelton, a distance of 175 miles, compare very favourably with the freight for carrying cars between Southampton and St Malo, a distance of 150 miles across the English Channel. For light cars the cost on the Continent is £7 10s return, whereas between Wellington and Lyttelton it is £4 2s 6d return. Freight costs for larger cars are lower in New Zealand in about the same proportion. The passenger rates in New Zealand are also cheaper.
