ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS
LOYAL MASTERTON LODGE. I ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Masterton Loyal Lodge of Oddfellows, after referring to the severe loss the lodge sustained as the result of the deaths of Bros A. H. Rippon, G. R. Scarf and A. Mayhew, goes on to state:— From a numerical viewpoint the year has not maintained the usual average of new entrants; this may be accounted for through the competition or the possible misunderstanding that exists regarding the benefits derivable under Social Security. We have no desire to criticise or even minimise those benefits; in fact we are firmly of the opinion that there is ample room in our community for both Social Security and Friendly Societies, which if properly organised, can be made to work together in the interests of the common weal. We would like to point out that, in the Manchester Unity, there is no probationary period or means test and all benefits are procurable from the time of joining and sickness benefits are payable from date of declaring on until date of declaring off. We exhort all members to manifest an active interest in the numerical progress of their lodge, for it is only by the constant influx of new entrants of the right type and age that we can expect to maintain that supremacy, tradition and prosperity which is the pride of our great Order. “It is not our intention to elaborate on the position of the various funds but will allow the balance sheet to supply that very necessary information but it will no doubt interest members to learn that, during the past year, a total sum of £628 13s lid was paid out in direct cash benefits, which is unquestionably a record. We would, however, appeal to members not to withhold any comments or criticism they may wish to make for it is only through honest and constructive criticism that we can hope to achieve the best results.
"This opportunity cannot be allowed to pass without endeavouring to pay a just tribute to P.G. Bro A. P. Smith, who. during a most critical period and at much inconvenience to himself, most generously placed his services at the disposal of the lodge; it being only one of numerous occasions in which our esteemed Brother had displayed that noble spirit of a true and faithful Odd Fellow, for which we most freely extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation. Our sincere appreciation is due to the medical officers as well as the manager of the U.F.S. Dispensary. Mr L. J. Taylor and staff, for the excellent service, courtesy and attention they are extending to members. Our grateful thanks are also due to the management of the "Times-Age” Co., Ltd.. whose columns are, at all times, at our disposal for reports of meetings. In conclusion we desire to express special thanks and appreciation to members of the various committees for the vast amount of work they have accomplished in furthering the wellbeing of the lodge and to all officers and members we are indeed grateful for the kindly interests manifested. With very best wishes for a most enjoyable and prosperous 1940. The report is signed b}' P. G. Reynolds. N.G.. C. E. Mooney. V.G.. and L. F. Morris. I.P.N.G.
