CARTERTON

THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION ON SATURDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton Centennial celebrations will take place on the Showgrounds on Saturday next and given fine weather should be an historical event. Great interest is being taken in the procession which will take place from Victoria Street to the Showgrounds. The order of procession will be: Pioneers, school children, Carterton Band. Boy Scouts, R.S.A., Fire Brigade, trade exhibits, Wairarapa Scottish Pipe Band, transport, old and modern, Messrs Garrity Bros.’ farming and other plant, Wairarapa South County Council's road making plant. Borough plant, etc. On arrival at the Showgrounds there will be a programme of sports mostly for school children. The centennial committee and organisers for the various sections are sparing no pains to make the event an outstanding success. In connection with the sports the starter and handicapper will be Mr W. Hail; the judges Messrs W. J. Candy, J. McKenzie, P. Reid, J. Steel and A. E. Reid; the track officials, Messrs W. A. Hart, W. Herdman and F. Booth, and the marshals, Messrs H. T. Leete and Crane. Painful Mishap. Mr E. Phelps, of Chester Road, Clareville, was the victim of a painful mishap on Sunday. He was playing cricket and while endeavouring to stop a very fast ball, misjudged it, the ball hitting his nose and severely injuring it. Successful Tenderer. Recently the Education Board advertised tenders for the purchase for removal of the headteacher’s residence adjoining the school grounds at South Carterton. Mr W. S. King, who was among the tenderers has received notice that his tender has been accepted and he will shortly proceed to dismantle the building. Bowling. Arrangements are being made for weekend bowling matches to be played at Dannevirke and Upper Hutt by members of the Carterton Bowling Club. Fierce Gale. Yesterday afternoon,) accompanied by intermittent rain showers, a fierce westerly gale raged in Carterton and district. It continued until nightfall when the wind dropped. No damage is reported.
