BJORKO FORTRESS
CAPTURE BY RUSSIANS DENIED EXPECTED TO HOLD OUT FOR WEEKS. TOWN CF SAME NAME TAKEN ON MAINLAND. (Received This Day, 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, February 26. A message direct from Viborg today states that the island fortress of Bjorko is now cut off from the Finnish land forces, but continues an enfilading fire against the Russians going to the front, causing great slaughter. The Finns are confident that the fortress will hold out for weeks. It is confirmed that the Russians have occupied the town of Bjorko on the mainland and aiso several islands in the Viborg Archipelago, but none of the vital fortress points in this region have yet been taken. A report from Helsinki confirms that Viborg is held and that the Finnish flag is still flying over the Bjorko fortress. It is believed that it will be possible to get supplies to the garrison from many small islands in Viborg Bay. The Russians shell Viborg every night and the majority of the buildings are reported to be in ruins.
