A FLOOD TRAGEDY

CRASH INTO STREAM. WELL-KNOWN FOOTBALLER DROWNED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WESTPORT. February 25. Heavy rain during Friday night and early Saturday morning was responsible for a tragedy on the loopline road about six miles from Westport. Two men in a car left Westport for Tiroroa about midnight. They were Messrs W. Hill and Joseph McAuliffe. Their car crashed into a swollen stream, the approach to the bridge having been washed away. Both managed to get out on to the running board and Mr Hill scrambled on to the bank, but Mr McAuliffe disappeared. His body was found at 6 o’clock this evening near the mouth of the stream. Mr McAuliffe was well known formerly in Rugby circles, having represented Southland, Canterbury and Wanganui. He was single and aged about 38 years.
