FAREWELL GATHERING
PRESENTATION TO MR R. G. VILE. ("Times-Age” Special.) Yesterday afternoon the inmates of the Buchanan Home assembled in the large dining-room to do honour to Mr R. G. Vile, who has retired from business. The Matron (Miss L. Higginson) presided. Mrs R. G. Vile, Dr Oakey and the Nursing Staff, Mrs Oakey, Senr, the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs Horton), Miss Card (Mayoress of Featherston), Mrs J. F. Thompson (Hospital Board) and Mrs Thompson. Mr G. F. Eagar and Mrs A. B. Balfour were amongst those present. Mr J. F. Thompson, at the request of all the old people of Buchanan Home, expressed to Mr Vile their deepest appreciation of his active work over a long period of years in connection with their welfare and comfort. The Christmas Cheer Fund, promoted each year by Mr Vile, had always ensured their happiness and well being in the season of goodwill. They wished him a return to health and a happy future for himself and his wife in their retirement. His public services were fully realised. Mr C. Andrews (Buchanan Home) in a few words presented Mr Vile with a handsome leather- travelling case, musical honours being, accorded the recipient. . Miss Card (Featherston) heartily supported the previous speakers and paid a tribute to Mr Vile for his efforts on behalf of the old people. Mr A. W. Horton (Mayor) added his appreciation of Mr Vile’s endeavours to brighten the lives of the old people, and of his efforts for the progress oi Greytown and district. The Matron (Miss L. Higginson) expressed on behalf of the staff their great indebtedness to the guest of honour for his splendid help at all times.
Mr Vile feelingly replied. He stated that his efforts for those in the evening of life in the Buchanan Home had always been a labour of love, and that he had been more than rewarded by the knowledge always of their appreciation.
.The matron and staff entertained the guests, the old people and the visitors) to afternoon tea. WAIRARAPA DIGGERS VISIT TO TRENTHAM. Over 50 members of the Greytown. Carterton and Masterton Returned Soldiers’ Associations paid a visit to the Trentham Military Camp yesterday afternoon as the guests of the old soldiers stationed in the camp. The party was met at the camp gates by the Trentham Military Band who. played them into the main camp. After refreshments had been served the whole party was escorted over the old and new portions of the camp. Building operations are still in full swing and before long the whole of the troops now under canvas will be accommodated in huts. The party, was entertained at afternoon tea in the Sergeants’ Mess. On behalf of the visitors Mr J. W. Barnard and Mr Fletcher expressed thanks for the hospitality they had received. Bowling. Playing for the Trotman Cup Nelson beat Bockett, Kilgour beat Connolly. McLeod beat Dennes, Brunton beat Burden. Owing to the wet afternoon no bowling fixtures were played at Greytown on Saturday. Brown and Connolly defeated Burns and Brunton in the McLeod Buttons. Personal Items. Mr A. Bouzaid has left for Palmerston North where he has received an appointment with a printing firm. Mr and Mrs Clinton Stringfellow, of Pahiatua, were weekend guests to Mr and Mrs A. D. Burch. Papawai.
