OBITUARY
MR ALEXANDER STEWART.
The death occurred on Saturday of Mr Alexander Stewart, of 71 Lincoln Road, Masterton. at the age of 85 years. The late Mr Stewart was born at Perth, Scotland, and came out to Victoria in his early teens, following farming pursuits. He was the first man, it is stated, to operate and drive a grain stripper in Australia. He later farmed at Colebrook, Tasmania, and worked for the Mt Lyell Railway Company on the west coast of Tasmania. Mr Stewart left Tasmania in 1906 to come to New Zealand and on his arrival in this country h’e took up his residence in Masterton. where he had resided ever since, following the occupation of gardener. He is survived by five sons, Messrs John. Robert and Charles Stewart. (Masterton), Don Stewart (Samoa) and William Stewart (Wellington). His wife and one son and one daughter predeceased him, the son having been killed in the Great War. The funeral took place this afternoon.
