PIPE BAND CONTEST
WELLINGTON-HAWKE’S BAY CENTRE. WAIRARAPA SECOND IN TEST. The annual Wellington-Hawke’s Bay Centre Pipe Band contest was held at Feilding on Saturday when eight bands competed. The weather conditions were atrocious. Rain was almost continuous throughout the day. Sultry heat added to the discomfiture and underfoot was a mixture of mud and pools of water. It was not surprising to find that under these conditions the Wairarapa College Pipe Band, after a three-hour trip in a bus and a hurried luncheon, .failed to reproduce its true form and was unplaced in both the quickstep competition and the street march. In the evening, however, the band made amends by a brilliant performance in the test selection. The band has never played better and to secure second place in such competition was an achievement on which it must be congratulated. The results of the competitions were:— Aggregate: Ruahine 1, Manawatu Scottish 2. Quickstep: Ruahine 1, Manawatu Scottish 2. Test selection: Wanganui Highland 1, Wairarapa College 2, Manawatu Scottish 3, Ruahine 4. Drum-majors’ display: Ruahine 1, Wellington Caledonian 2. Music in quickstep: Wanganui Highland 1, Manawatu Scottish 2. Drumming: Wellington Caledonian 1. Manawatu Scottish 2.
