TRAGEDY AVERTED
TWO YOUTHS RESCUED FROM DROWNING. INCIDENT AT NAPIER. Prompt action by Mr E. F. Doggett, of Napier, second son of Senior-Ser-geant G. A. Doggett and Mrs Doggett, of Masterton resulted in a drowning tragedy being averted at Napier last week. It, is stated that two youths were in a small dinghy about half a mile from the Marine Parade, when the oar was knocked overboard. One lad dived over to recover it, but by the lime he had swam to it the boat had drifted some distance away, towards the open sea. The other boy abandoned the boat to assist the other lad and made an attempt to reach the shore. The boys were still about half a mile out from the shore and their plight was seen by Mr Doggett, who was passing along the parade. Mr Doggett took out two life lines stationed at the Te Awa Swimming and Life Saving Club's shed on the beach, and brought the boys, who were by then in an exhausted condition, to the shore. Mr Doggett, who is a very strong swimmer is a keen life saving enthusiast, and the boys were fortunate that his services were available so promptly.
