EXETER & AJAX
OFFICERS & MEN FETED IN LONDON LUNCHEON AT GUILDHALL. KING AND QUEEN PRESENT. There was a tremendous welcome io the 760 officers and men of the Exeter and Ajax when they marched through the streets of London to attend the function at the Guildhall, a Daventry message states. The Lord Mayor praised the showing of the men in their action against the Graf Spee and the captains of the two warships paid a tribute to the men and referred to the careful preparation that had been made to meet the pocket battleship. Mr Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, said the occasion was a joyous and memorable one and disclosed that the Navy now had a fleet of 1,700 auxiliaries engaged in antisubmarine and mine operations. The King invested officers and men with awards for gallantry in the action. Mr Chamberlain, Mr Churchill and the Duke of Kent were also present. The King and Queen spoke to the relatives of men who had died in the action.
