The Hon P. Fraser, Deputy-Prime Minister, will return to Wellington from Auckland today. The Hon F. Jones. Minister of Defence, will return to Wellington from Auckland tomorrow. The Hon P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour, left Wellington for the West Coast yesterday. Mr C. C. Ruby, manager of the Bank of Australasia. Masterton. is on holiday. Mr C. Kyngdon is actingmanager during his absence. • Chief-Mechanician L. Hood, who entered the Navy from Featherston, is included in a list of awards to men who played a prominent part in the action of H.M.S. Achilles against the Graf Spec. The following appointments are announced by the Victoria University College Council:' Temporary parttime lecturer in subjects for Accountancy Law: R. E. Pope, LL.M. Temporary part-time lecturer in BookKeeping HI and Auditing: Mr W. G. Rodger. Tutor in arts and crafts in the Victoria University College district: Mr S. M. Williams. Mrs J. Henderson, of Kahautara, Featherston, had the misfortune to slip on the concrete dipping yards this week on Mr Carne Bidwill’s property at Kahautara and fracture a bone in one of her ankles. She is at present a patient in Masterton Hospital. Mrs Henderson is a daughter of Mr and Mrs K. E. Welch. Makora Road, Masterton.
Dr Edward G. Sayers, Auckland, has been awarded the Cilento Medal for 1940 by the Institute of Anatomy of Canberra for his work for native welfare in the tropics. Dr Sayers, who has practised in Auckland for the last five years, will go into camp early in March, and will later take up a post with New Zealand’s overseas forces as specialist in tropical diseases at the first general hospital. Mr Roger Henry, formerly of the Masterion Courthouse staff, was admitted to the Wellington Hospital last Saturday as the result of injuries received when he fell down the steps of his garden at his residence at Wadestown on the previous night. Mr Henry was discovered next morning in an unconscious condition, in. which state he remained for several days. His condition is reported to be improving. At the meeting of shareholders of the United Press Association at Rotorua yesterday, the retiring directors, Messrs C. Stanley Smith and W. Easton, were re-elected to the board. Because of his enlistment for military service. Mr R. D. Horton resigned from the board of directors, and Sir Henry Horton, who retired from the board two years ago after 30 years’ service, was appointed' to fill the vacancy. At a meeting of directors after the shareholders’ meeting, Mr E. A. Blundell was elected chairman.
Mr J. A. Colway, formerly of Masterton. who has been on the reporting staff of the “Wanganui Chronicle" since 1935. will enter the Wereroa Royal New Zealand Air Force training school on March 12. Mr Colway has been tmember of the Wanganui Aero Club for four years, and holds a pilot's licence. At a meeting of the Wanganui City Council, the Mayor. Mr W. J. Rogers, congratulated him on his enlistment and wished him well in his new sphere. Mr Colway is an old boy of the Wairarapa High School.
