NEW ZEALAND PILOT’S BAD LUCK MACHINE-GUNS FROZEN DURING CHASE. SECOND SCOUTING PLANE MISSING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, February 18. The machine-guns of a single-seater plane piloted by a New Zealander froze after a short burst when he was trailing a Heinkel bomber. The pilot, who had previously brought down two Dorniers, hung on to the raider, hoping that his guns would again become effective, but the rear gunner of the Heinkel opened a heavy fire, compelling the New Zealander to land with his plane damaged beyond repair. The raider returned to Germany. Another Royal Air Force plane, in addition to one reported yesterday, has failed to return from a reconnaissance over the North Sea. It is assumed in London that this is the machine referred to in today’s 'German communique, which says that yesterday several British planes penetrated the Heligoland Bight and were intercepted by fighters, which shot down one Bristol Blenheim. All the members of the crew were drowned, according to the Berlin communique.
