CARTERTON

RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the stewards of the Carterton Racing Club was held in the P. and A. Society’s building last, evening. Mr W. Howard Booth (president) occupied the chair and there were also present: Messrs L. H. Smart. Geo. Eaton, C. Jensen, E. J. Matson. P. Bain, Geo. Brown, A. O. Abbott, R. G. Kemble, J. C. Harp, F. C. Yule, Geo. A. Vincent, J. Johnston, V. L. Robinson and the secretary, Mr J. B. Bairstow. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs P. A. Cole and W. C. Deller. Before the business of the meeting was commenced the president referred to the death of Mr C. Reid. Mr Booth said that he did not know of any one who had taken such a keen interest in all kinds of sport as the late Mr Reid. He was sure that they would deeply regret his death. On Mr Booth’s motion is was decided that a leter of condolence be forwarded to deceased’s relatives, and as a mark of respect all present stood in silence for a few moments. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £626 7s 2d at the Bank of NewZealand. Receipts since the last meeting amounted to £BB 6s. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £l2 13s Bd. It was resolved that Messrs Merritt and Fox be engaged to conduct the totalisator at the race meeing in March. The question of employing a radio service at the March race meeting was held over until the receipt of nominations. The offer of F. Higgenbotham, of Christchurch, at 10s per set of white colours for emergency use at the races, was accepted. The matter of issuing complimentary tickets was left to the secretary. In connection with a return railway train from Wellington on race day it was decided that the president and Mr V. L. Robinson approach the Railway Department on the matter, with power to act. Mr Judd, a trustee of the club, who is now a resident of Hawke’s Bay, is to be invited to .attend the next meeting of stewards, and also to be present at the annual meeting to be held In March. A report of the Ground Committee was received and certain repairs were authorised to be carried out. It was decided that the next meeting of the stewards be held on the date of the closing of nominations. “GIFT EVENING” BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED. A very enjoyable “gift evening” was tendered Miss Rene Smart, daughter of Mr and Mrs L. H. Smart, of Clifton Avenue, at the residence of Mrs R. Harrington on Thursday night. “Many of Miss Smart’s friends were present and a large number of very useful gifts were presented to Miss Smart who is to be married shortly. Miss Smart suitably acknowledged the honour done her. i : During the evening a competition : was won by Miss E. Ingley. Supper I brought a very pleasant gathering to a close. i TIVOLI THEATRE NEW PROGRAMME TONIGHT. There was an exceptionally large’attendance at the Tivoli picture theatre last evening when a big double programme was submitted, which included “On Our Selection” and “Peck’s Bad Boy With the Circus.” Tonight there ] ■will be another outstanding programme ] headed by “The Valley of the Giants,” starring Wayne Morris and Claire Tre- c vor. Personals. ; Mrs J. Steele, of Wyndham Street, Carterton, left yesterday for Dannevirke, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs G. Stroud. Mrs A. C. Tucker, of Rhodes Street, t who has been visiting Hastings, re ) turned to Carterton yesterday. ( Mr James Steel, of Carterton, has been appointed a member of the Assessment Court for Farm-land List for the Borough of Carterton, in succes- J sion to Mr W. Howard Booth, who has resigned from the Court. Superintendent R. P. Wakelin, of the Carterton Fire Brigade, left this morn- c ing for Petone where he will judge the . fire brigade events at the Hutt Valley ' Fire Brigade demonstration. Mr and Mrs H. Pointon, who have s been spending a holiday at Riversdale. have returned to Carterton. Club Hotel. In today’s issue tenders are invited for painting the Club Hotel, Carterton.
