OBITUARY
MR JOSEPH FRANKLIN. Mr Joseph Franklin, who died at Martinborough on Thursday, was born at Biggleswade, Bedford, England, in 1859. He went to Auckland in his teens, and in the GO's took up a bush section, at Woodville, and worked in the employ of Knight Bros, threshing mill proprietors. At the age of 22 he received an engineering appointment at the Tomoana Freezing Works. He married Miss Esther Brunskill (daughter of a pioneer settler) in 1887. About 1892 he joined the Hawke’s Bay Dairy Company as engineer and inspector, and remained in that position for 20 years. Later he was engineer for the Woodville Freezing Company. About 20 years ago he sold his property at Woodville and later went to reside in Martinborough. He was a member of the Woodville Odd Fellows’ Lodge and of the Waihenga Masonic Lodge. For some years he did service for the town as a borough councillor. A widow and two daughters—Mrs A. J. Rendle (Kahutara) and P. D. Wilkie (Upper Hutt) survive. A third daughter, Mrs McGahan. predeceased him about three years ago. The funeral took place this faternoon, the cortege including several Masterton residents. ARCHBISHOP OF DUBLIN. The late Most Rev. Edward J. Byrne was born in Dublin in 1872. He was appointed Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland in 1921.
